These are documented examples, not representative current error rates. Google disputed parts of the later investigation and said its clinicians considered many examples accurate and supported by quality sources.
Context can change the meaning
In May 2024, Google acknowledged inaccurate AI Overviews involving issues such as satire, forum material, and misinterpreted language. It described technical improvements and tighter triggering rules rather than claiming individual edits alone solved the problem.
In January 2026, The Guardian reported removal of some liver-test summaries after experts raised concerns about misleading context. Google said it did not comment on individual removals and disputed aspects of the wider investigation, stating that its clinicians found many examples accurate. The disagreement does not support a universal current failure rate.
Check the inference, not just the footnote
A source may be accurate for a particular population, jurisdiction, time, or definition. A generated summary can lose those conditions. In professional work, the reviewer needs the original context as well as the conclusion.
- Record the scope and qualifications of the supporting source.
- Check whether the conclusion extends beyond what the source establishes.
- Keep medical, legal, and financial decisions with appropriately qualified people.
A PRACTICAL THADDEUS WORKFLOW
Bring the supporting passage into the review.
Deep Research can organize source excerpts and classify claims, while plans make the expected scope explicit. Use that combination to create a brief that preserves qualifications and exposes interpretation for human review.
Try this assignment
Summarize these public guidance documents for our staff. Preserve jurisdiction, date, exclusions, and definitions. Separate direct statements from your interpretation and flag anything that needs professional review. Do not provide individual medical or legal advice.
Source inspection does not make generated interpretation infallible. This workflow supports review and does not replace qualified professional judgment or establish clinical superiority.
